Cineast 2022: The Pawnshop
The Pawnshop / Lombard (Poland 2022)
documentary, 81 min, en subtitles, 12+. Directed by Łukasz Kowalski, written by Łukasz Kowalski
Jola and Wiesiek are partners in both life and business. With great commitment and dedication, they run a huge pawnshop in an impoverished and unemployment-stricken district of one of Southern Poland's major cities. Surrounded by thousands of worthless objects which they try to give new life, visited by residents to whom they provide material and spiritual support, often selflessly, they themselves have found their relationship in crisis. Moreover, the spectre of bankruptcy is looming over them. By various means, the eccentric couple tries to save both the pawnshop and their feelings from fading away.
It's a story about the struggle for survival told in a humorous and touching way. The director approaches his protagonists with great warmth and empathy, having a lot of understanding for their often-explosive attitudes and controversial ideas, and roots for them both in their professional and private lives. Will the two heroes manage to get out of financial trouble and save their relationship?
