Cineast Film Festival: The Cars We Drove into Capitalism
The Cars We Drove into Capitalism / Колите, с които нахлухме в капитализма (Bulgaria, Germany, Denmark, Croatia, Czech Republic, 2021) documentary, 93 min, en subtitles. Directed, written and filmed by Boris Missirkov and Georgi Bogdanov
An unforgettable collection of characters from all around Europe, stuck between their past and future, for whom their old cars are the most important members of their family - their true favorites, which give them meaning and hope.
From the love story of a young couple who met thanks to their love for cars, through inheritance of the one and only car companiоn of the last sexton in a small village, through a girl inspired by pin-up modelling, to the fate-changing political moment for them - when you have to abandon your beloved car to jump through the border to the "free" world.
A cinematic journey, made with ultimate attention to its heroes. They love the feeling of freedom, which the growling of their clumsy automobiles gives them. Their journey back and forth the past and the future raises the question of identity and collective memory of some 500 million Europeans today.
“We are quite interested in the psychological reasons of the people’s attachment to these cars that is going on even today. It is a strange form of nostalgia - not so much for the Socialism or the youth, but for a time when a vehicle was reparable with your own hands and a few simple instruments. Most of the drivers had to learn the guts of their cars, if they wanted to have a moving vehicle - and knowing your car from the inside created a much stronger bond between the man and the machine.” Boris Missirkov and Georgi Bogdanov
