Dzērves
Traditional Latvian music evening with the Latvian folklore group in Luxembourg "Dzērves" celebrating the 10th anniversary of the group. Musical performances and traditional dancing party.
The Latvian folklore group Dzērves was created in 2007 to teach Latvian traditional songs and dances to children. Adults formed their folklore group soon afterwards. Together with spouses and children, now there are nearly 50 people in Luxembourg and across the border who call themselves Dzērves.
Dzērves visit their home country Latvia quite often. This is why the folklore group is named after a migratory bird dzērve (a crane) that returns home in spring.
The members of Dzērves come from all over Latvia and this is why our songs and folk costumes cover every region of Latvia. Dzērves have taken part in the Latvian Song and Dance Festival (a very important musical event in Latvia) and the International Folklore Festival Baltica. Children are regular guests at the Latvian Youth Song and Dance Festival. Dzērves have performed at various events in Luxembourg, its surroundings and in Brussels.
Dzērves learn and play many different musical instruments – the violin, the kokle, the accordion, the drums, the zither, the two-stringed bowed zither (ģīga), the mandolin and the pipe. Dzērves have learned a lot from their guests (from “Grodi”, “Iļģi”, “Budēļi”, the Latvian Dance Club, “Laiva”, “Kokle”, “Vilki” etc.). Dzērves have visited folklore groups in Latvia – “Egle” in Medņeva and “Suitu sievas” in Alsunga.
In December 2012 Dzērves launched a CD with 20 songs, including one Luxembourgish song.
Dzērves keep learning new songs to get ready for the next international folklore festival “Baltica” and Latvian Song and Dance Festival in 2018.
