A promising young rugby talent from a provincial town in early 1990s post-Soviet Lithuania is seeking his place in this world. Caught between black-market deals, underground music and teenage mischief, Rimantas falls in love and begins to explore who he really wants to be. His relationship with Monika pushes him to question the boundaries he’s always lived within, as he resists the plans others have made for him. The Southern Chronicles shines a light on the genuine exploration of identity, hope and the fragile promise of the future. Based on Rimantas Kmita’s own teenage years and his popular 2016 autobiographical novel, the highly entertaining and engaging film offers an authentic portrait of a 17-year-old whose inner world is transformed by the world around him. Featuring vivid, strong performances and a richly textured atmosphere, the film reminds us of what it feels like to chase meaning in a world full of confusion.
