Cineast 2017: Normal Autistic Film
Normal Autistic Film / Normální autistický film
directed by Miroslav Janek , documentary, 88 min, eng subtitles, 12+ written by Miroslav Janek, Czech Republik 2016
Luka loves movies and writes his own screenplays. Denis is a piano virtuoso, able to play demanding classical pieces. Majda likes to rap – her bold lyrics expose the surrounding world with disarming accuracy. Marjamka is able to tell long stories in English, while her tireless brother Ahmed is very friendly. Five remarkable children that society has unflatteringly labelled “autistic”. Miroslav Janek, the foremost Czech documentary-maker and versatile film-maker, editor of Godfrey Reggio’s famous Quatsi-trilogy, challenges us to stop perceiving autism as a medical diagnosis and try to understand it as a fascinating way of thinking that’s often maddeningly difficult to decipher. Because who’s to determine what’s normal – living in a constant rush while disregarding the absurdity of modern life or wistfully seeking order, peace and tranquillity in the world? An intimate and playful portrait of a group of kids with Asperger's Syndrome, presenting autism not as a medical condition, but rather a mysterious way of thinking worthy of recognition and respect, one that might provoke others to challenge their stereotypical beliefs and perception of what's “normal”.
